DELMONT, S.D. (AP) - A man leading the charge to redevelop the tornado-ravaged town of Delmont is starting with two of the town’s longstanding staples, the Onion House and the Delmont Steakhouse and Lounge.
Leo Holzbauer is leading the redevelopment of the town damaged by a tornado on Mother’s Day 2015, The Mitchell Daily Republic (https://bit.ly/2lSAaRX) reported.
“(Delmont) will bounce back if you work at it,” Holzbauer said. “If you don’t do anything, nothing’s going to happen because it’ll get left.”
The South Dakota State Historical Society recently announced that the Delmont Historical Society has received a $20,000 matching grant for structural and roof repair on the Onion House’s dome tower. The Historical Society must match the $20,000, bringing the total to $40,000. The total cost to renovate the Onion House is $48,000.
Holzbauer said the Historical Society will raise the remaining $28,000 through fundraisers and community donations. He’s confident the project can be completed.
“When the weather’s good, we’ll start on it,” Holzbauer said. “The city of Delmont needed that to keep some of its identity and we’re really working at that.”
Holzbauer bought the Delmont Steakhouse and Lounge in September 2015. It has been closed for about a year. He’s offering the business to anyone who can run it with a clean environment for five years.
Holzbauer said at the end of the five-year partnership he will give the business to its next owners for free.
