HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - William Carey University in Hattiesburg has received a pledge of $2 million from the nonprofit Asbury Foundation to help with recovery from a tornado.
The Jan. 21 tornado destroyed several buildings on Carey’s campus and damaged many more. Recovery is underway, and students returned to campus in February.
Tommy King, the president of the Baptist university, told the Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/2lEPeyZ ) that the Asbury money would be used to cover any shortfall between insurance coverage and the actual cost of rebuilding.
King had said the university would not apply for federal funds for rebuilding because of the delays in getting the money and the restrictions that might be put on a religious institution like Carey if it used federal dollars.
