AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The wife of former Texas Health and Human Services Commissioner Chris Traylor has been killed in a car crash.

The Department of Public Safety says Laura Traylor died in a crash shortly before 11 p.m. on Wednesday near the South Texas community of Los Fresnos.

DPS says her Cadillac SRX was hit along a state highway by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that veered into the opposite lane “for unknown reasons.” They continue to investigate.

Traylor, age 53, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep’s driver was hospitalized with injuries that aren’t life threatening.

In the state Legislature on Thursday, lawmakers honored Traylor and her family. Her husband headed the state’s sprawling health agency for about a year before leaving last May.
