CHICAGO (AP) - Jurors have found that a 50-year-old Kentucky man could be committed under Illinois law because he’s likely to sexually assault someone again in the future.
The Cook County jury determined Craig Childress met the criteria of the 1997 Sexually Violent Persons Act. It allows someone who both has a record of violent sexual assault and who suffers from mental illness to be held for treatment by Illinois’ Department of Human Services.
An attorney general’s office statement says Childress’ record includes a conviction in Kentucky in 1989 for rape. Childress was then convicted in 1994 for attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault for attacking a Chicago woman. He received a 29-year sentence in that case.
The Illinois law requires that Childress be reevaluated regularly. An attorney for Childress couldn’t immediately be located to pursue comment.
