WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A North Carolina trucker behind the wheel of a rig that pinned and killed a woman in Massachusetts two years ago has pleaded guilty to negligent driving and avoided jail.
The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/2nMo65D ) reports that under a plea deal, a vehicular homicide charge was dismissed and 63-year-old Gary Shray was sentenced Wednesday to five years of probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.
Authorities say after the Oriental, North Carolina, trucker pulled over to allow a firetruck to pass in Worcester (WUS’-tur), he tried to take a right toward an interstate and he knocked over a street light. The falling pole forced 24-year-old Sarah Ewing, of Hudson, and a friend standing on the sidewalk toward the truck. Ewing was trapped under the rear wheels and died at the hospital.
