TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Tupelo City Council is expected to decide on the creation of a police advisory board at its first meeting in April.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2mUaO28) council members agreed Tuesday to position the advisory board for a vote on April 4.

Opponents have questioned the need for the panel, which supporters say would serve as a channel of communication between police and the community.

Councilman Mike Bryan says he believes Tupelo police officers already do a good job of communicating with the public.

Mayor officials confirmed Tuesday that a draft of an ordinance creating the board hasn’t been finished.

The council has seen and discussed a proposal that outlines a board composed of nine residents along with appointments made by each council member and the mayor.
