RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a Marathon County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a suspect after a standoff in north-central Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice says police responded to an armed hostage situation in Rib Mountain early Thursday. After negotiating with the suspect for more than two hours, the deputy shot and killed him.

The name of the man who was killed was not released.

WAOW-TV (https://bit.ly/2mhPHuo ) reports the deputy was not hurt. The deputy has seven years of law enforcement experience and was placed on administrative leave while state authorities investigate.

In a statement, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association says the deputy “exercised great restraint” and that officers at the scene “made every effort” to de-escalate the situation.

No other details were released.
