PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Democratic presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee says he’s open to switching political parties again as he contemplates a run for his previous job as Rhode Island governor.

Chafee tells Rhode Island Public Radio (https://bit.ly/2rU8EUk ) he could change his affiliation to what is “most effective” to represent Rhode Island, but ruled out being a Republican.

Chafee was a Republican U.S. senator from 1999 to 2007. He was elected governor in 2010 as an independent but became a Democrat midway through his single four-year term.

He’s now considering a bid to unseat his successor, Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo, whose performance in office Chafee has criticized.

Raimondo is planning to seek re-election in 2018.

Chafee says he’ll decide if he’s running and his party affiliation sometime in the next year.
