SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Brigham Young University professor says he’s ending his legal fight to enter the race to replace Rep. Jason Chaffetz.
Chia-Chi (CHA-Chee) Teng said in a Facebook post Monday he’s dropping his lawsuit because he doesn’t want to delay the election and increase costs. He says he could win his challenge to a state law that requires candidates to come in person to file to run, but he’d rather see it change in the legislature.
Teng says he couldn’t file in person because he’s teaching in China this summer. Officials denied his bid to file via video conference.
Teng filed suit to challenge their decision, but Judge Barry Lawrence ruled Friday that Teng’s constitutional rights hadn’t been violated.
Teng, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully last year against Chaffetz, who is stepping down June 30.
