READING, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania prosecutor says he won’t bring charges against a police officer who fatally shot a 25-year-old man with a Taser during a domestic dispute.
Berks County District Attorney John Adams announced Friday that the officer acted in self-defense in the April 12 incident where Kenneth Johnson was reportedly struggling with Reading police during an arrest attempt.
Authorities said Johnson swung his arms and verbally threated an officer during an attempt to handcuff him. The officer then shot him with a Taser and said he was distressed and unresponsive as he lay on the ground.
Johnson was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Officials later said the cause was sudden cardiac arrest.
Police were originally responding to two 911 calls of a man assaulting a woman.
