BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - Construction has begun on a new multi-use trail on New York’s Southern Tier that’s intended to make it easier to get around the city of Binghamton.

The $4.2 million bicycle and pedestrian path will connect downtown Binghamton to neighborhoods on the city’s south side.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the start of the work on Thursday. He says the trail will provide visitors and residents with new transportation options and better connect the entire community.

It’s the first phase of a larger plan to build a multi-use greenway trail between Binghamton and Binghamton University’s main campus.

Republican state Sen. Fred Akshar, whose district includes Binghamton, says the project will improve downtown access and serve as a great asset to local residents and university students.
