SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah has cemented his plans to resign from the U.S. House of Representatives effectively June 30.

Chaffetz said in a letter Friday to House Speaker Paul Ryan that he “herby resigns” effective June 30 at 10 a.m.

The Republican had previously sent a letter to Utah’s governor that he intended to resign June 30.

Some Utah GOP lawmakers had said that the letter was not legally binding and Chaffetz could change his mind. Legislators said they didn’t have any reason to think he would change his mind but said it could open the state up to lawsuits from candidates who already started campaigns to replace him.

Chaffetz’s spokeswoman MJ Henshaw said Friday that the congressman had to send an official letter to the speaker and it solidifies his resignation date.
