JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a man has drowned in a Florida river.
The Florida Times-Union reports the 54-year-old drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Trout River.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says he was hanging out with friends under the Main Street bridge when he decided to go for a swim.
Witnesses say the man distanced himself from the shore shortly after 4 p.m. and then began to struggle before becoming motionless in the water. The sheriff’s office says one witness attempted to swim to the man but was unable to as the current started to carry him away.
Rescue personnel on a fire department boat recovered the man’s body. His identity will not be released until next of kin is notified.
Police are investigating but do not suspect any foul play.
