SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - A small tornado touched down in Maryland as severe thunderstorms barreled through the region.
News outlets report the National Weather Service confirmed the EF-0 twister hit Silver Spring on Monday night. The tornado tracked through a residential neighborhood for about 1,000 feet (305 meters) along a path as wide as 100 feet (30 meters). Peak winds reached 70 mph (113 kph).
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer says the damage was significant, and at least one home was left uninhabitable. Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The twister landed as a line of storms brought wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph (64 to 806 kph) in many places. At one point, at least 34,000 homes and businesses were without power.
