NEW YORK (AP) - Two rookie firefighters with the New York City fire department are being credited with saving a family from an early morning fire.

FDNY Capt. Christopher Kane says he and probationary firefighters Dominic DiBiase and Christopher Rossi were called to a blaze in Brooklyn at 2 a.m. Thursday. The Daily News reports (https://nydn.us/2rZ0rk1 ) a mother and her two sons, ages 2 and 6, were trapped in their basement apartment with their father unable to get back inside.

Rossi rescued the mother and the younger boy while DiBiase carried out the 6-year-old.

The younger child was taken to a hospital in serious condition, and his brother is in critical but stable condition at a different local hospital.

All the residents of the building made it out unharmed.

Both firefighters graduated from the city’s fire academy in April.
