CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The police chief of South Carolina’s largest city says he is retiring.
In his resignation letter released Tuesday, Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said the time was right after overseeing the investigation into the June 2015 killing of nine worshippers at the Emanuel AME church and the trial of the killer, Dylann Roof.
Mullen says he’s proud of the Illumination Project, where he brought police officers together with community leaders in 30 meetings and came up with 86 proposals to better allow officers to keep communities safe and not hurt the dignity or individual rights of people after the church shooting
Mullen’s last day will be August 1.
Mullen came to Charleston in 2006 after rising through the ranks of the Virginia Beach police department for 20 years.
