ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Atlantic City Councilman Marty Small is seeking a recount of the vote in last week’s Democratic mayoral primary, in which he led in votes cast on machines but lost due to a wave of absentee ballots for his opponent.
Small filed a petition Monday in state Superior Court, seeking a recount in the vote which gave fellow Councilman Frank Gilliam the Democratic nomination for mayor.
The Atlantic County Clerk’s Office had expected to certify the results Monday. But it now says Wednesday is more likely.
Small led by 100 votes on the machine tally. But Gilliam racked up a 485-vote edge in absentee ballots to win the nomination.
Unless the result is overturned, Gilliam will face incumbent Republican Don Guardian and independent Joseph Polillo in the November general election.
