CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - Canyon County Commissioners in southwest Idaho have approved spending $245,000 for a study involving inmate housing and overcrowding at the county jail.

The Idaho Press Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2r5Sq9u) that commissioners on Friday approved the contract with DLR Group to conduct the study.

The study will try to answer how long the current jail can be used, how much a new jail would cost, and how the existing jail could be renovated.

The jail has had overcrowding problems for years that led to a lawsuit and a federal consent decree in 2016 requiring the county to fix overcrowding and unsanitary jail conditions.

The county has spent $308,000 trying to take care of those problems.
