DETROIT (AP) - Volunteers from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan are scheduled to paint and clean up around 15 schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The work will be part of the ARISE Detroit! annual Neighborhoods Day on Saturday.

Organizers have said more than 200 community improvement projects and other events are scheduled across the city.

Project Compassion volunteers are planning to visit and entertain residents at eight east side nursing homes. Church and faith-based organizations will hold health fairs, cleanups and school supply giveaways.

Neighborhood peace walks also are scheduled.

ARISE Detroit! is a nonprofit, community mobilization coalition of more than 400 churches, block clubs and businesses.
