BURLINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Business and civic leaders have formed a charitable foundation to serve northern Kentucky.

The Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky will focus on breaking the cycle of poverty, arts funding, development and innovation, education enrichment and improving regional health and wellness, The Kentucky Enquirer reported .

The foundation’s Council of Trustees tapped Nancy Grayson as president of the organization and community foundation. Prior to her selection, Grayson was the director of strategic initiatives at the Northern Kentucky Education Council.

Council of Trustees Chair Bill Butler, who serves as chairman of Corporex Cos., said the venture is “long overdue” and has the capacity to enact greater change through shared action.

“By our collective giving, bigger impacts and outcomes are possible,” Butler said.

The foundation will serve key programs primarily in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties.

The governing Council of Trustees includes the CEO and retired CEO of the E.W. Scripps Co., a Kenton County judge executive, the chief financial officers of Procter & Gamble Co. and The Kroger Co. and a retired president of Northern Kentucky University.

Founding trustee Bob Zapp, a retired CEO of the Bank of Kentucky, said the foundation ultimately aims to support a burgeoning region.

“This fund will provide our community with a philanthropic partner which can convene, consolidate and encourage charitable giving in a tax advantaged manner,” Zapp said in a statement. “By bringing together those with a philanthropic interest we can better influence and support our growing Northern Kentucky region.”
