PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) - An eastern Nebraska county has filed a complaint to require a neighboring county to raise its median property valuation so the two match.
The Omaha World-Herald reports the Sarpy County Board filed the petition to the state’s Tax Equalization and Review Commission this week to force Douglas County to raise its valuation to 96 percent of market value, which is the value of Sarpy County’s residential property.
The move could add thousands of dollars to the valuations of homes across Douglas County.
Sarpy County cited a letter from the state property tax administrator that says a statute could let a county board petition the commission to ensure equalization of property across counties.
The commission plans to meet Friday to determine whether it has jurisdiction to respond to Sarpy County’s request.
