MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Phil Scott is asking for federal help for seven counties that suffered damage during a series of storms between June 29 and July 1.

Scott, a Republican, says the storms played a financial burden on the communities. He says a federal disaster declaration is warranted.

The request would cover damage suffered in Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Orange, Rutland, Washington, and Windsor counties.

A preliminary damage assessment done by the Federal Emergency Management Agency identified about $4.7 million in damage to public infrastructure.

If granted, a disaster declaration would enable affected communities to be reimbursed for 75 percent of the costs of the response to the storm and recovery.
