KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) - The body of a Japanese tourist who was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail has been found in a Central California river.
The body of 32-year-old Rika Morita was found Sunday in Kings Canyon National Park. Hikers discovered the submerged body in the south fork of the Kings River at the 10,000-foot (3,000-meter) level of the park. The body was retrieved on Monday.
Morita went missing on July 8.
Runoff from a record winter snowfall in the Sierra Nevada has swollen rivers, making them swift and treacherous. Hikers have been swept away and drowned while trying to cross them.
About a dozen people have died in Central California rivers since March, many in the Kern River, and dozens have been rescued.
