BELLMONT, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve recovered the body of a 32-year-old northern New York man who drowned while swimming in an Adirondack lake.

State police say George Mitchell, of Plattsburgh, was boating Saturday afternoon on Indian Lake in the Franklin County town of Bellmont, on the Adirondack Park’s northern boundary. Troopers say Mitchell decided to go swimming, jumped in the water and began struggling.

People who were boating with him tried to help him but were unsuccessful.

Local emergency crews, state forest rangers and state police divers searched for him until dusk. Troopers say the search resumed Sunday and police divers recovered Mitchell’s body.

His body was taken to a hospital for an autopsy.
