HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A 20-year-old seeking to run for a city council seat in North Carolina has lost an appeal to get his name on the ballot.
The Times-News of Hendersonville reports the Henderson County Board of Elections rejected the bid by John Moore in a meeting one week ago. On Thursday, the board rejected his appeal.
The board cited the North Carolina Constitution, part of which says qualified voters 21 years of age are eligible to run for election. Moore, who turned 20 on June 6, argued that the Hendersonville city charter lists no such age requirement, only that a potential candidate be a registered voter and city resident.
The board complemented Moore for his willingness to perform public service. He said he’s weighing his options, including an appeal through the courts.
