NEW YORK (AP) - Police in New York City have arrested a homeless man they say vandalized several statues at a Catholic church in Manhattan last month.
The New York Police Department says the 40-year-old man was charged with criminal mischief and a hate crime in the June 26 incident. Police say he jumped over a fence at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in SoHo and threw three statues of children at a large statue of the Virgin Mary.
The crime was caught on the church’s surveillance camera.
The Rev. Mario Julian says the damaged statues will cost up to $10,000 to repair. Julian says the historic 130-year-old church doesn’t have the funds to repair the statues.
