LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The Catholic Diocese of Lafayette is closing its adoption office and merging it with the one in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.

Diocese spokeswoman Blue Rolfes (RAHL-fuhs) tells The Advertiser that the office has handled only two adoptions over the past five years.

She says that’s part of a nationwide trend toward private adoption agencies.

The Lafayette diocese’s adoption office is called Catholic Social Services.

It is not connected with Catholic Services of Acadiana, which runs several homeless shelters, a diner for poor and homeless people and a center to help people in financial crisis.

Catholic Services of Acadiana executive director Kim Boudreaux says all of those services are continuing.
