Livan Hernandez, former Nationals pitcher, files for bankruptcy

Livan Hernandez, who pitched in parts of five seasons for the Washington Nationals, has filed for bankruptcy according to a report by The Miami Herald. 

The Herald’s report indicates that Hernandez filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in a Fort Lauderdale federal court, declaring that he owed up to $1 million to as many as 50 creditors. 

A World Series champion with the Florida Marlins in 1997, Hernandez was part of the pitching staff on the inaugural Nationals team in 2005. He went 15-10 that season, leading the majors in starts and innings pitched, as well as earning his second All-Star Game appearance. 

Hernandez was traded in the middle of the 2006 season to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but returned to Washington as a free agent in 2009. He remained with the Nationals until 2011 and retired the next season with a career record of 178-177.
