RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Portions of eastern and western North Carolina are under a winter storm warning in advance of a system expected to drop snow across most of the state.
The National Weather Service office in Greer, South Carolina, issued the warning Thursday for the piedmont and foothills of North Carolina, including Hickory and Charlotte. Forecasters are calling for up to 6 inches of snow. Precipitation will begin as rain and sleet Friday afternoon before ending on Saturday.
The weather service office in Raleigh issued a similar warning for most of central North Carolina, including the northern coastal plain and northern sandhills. That covers the Triad to the Research Triangle, Rocky Mount, Wilson and Sanford.
Up to 5 inches of snow is forecast for that area, with local totals approaching 7 inches.
