JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A century-old building in downtown Jacksonville has been converted into 16 apartments that will house homeless veterans.

The Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/2jaMR9n) reports that the $3.8 million project called Beaver Street Veterans Villas will open to its first tenants in February after years of planning and fundraising.

The building built in 1916 will also have office space for Veterans Administration employees.

The apartments are designed to be long-term homes for veterans who qualify for Section 8 rent vouchers and VA case management.

Since 2010, a federal effort to eliminate homelessness among veterans has reduced the number in Jacksonville to half of the 345 there were in 2011.

The villas are for men only, but plans to open apartments for women veterans are in the making.
