DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - The first seasonal flood outlook from the National Weather Service shows there’s a good chance for flooding in the Devils Lake region this spring and summer.
The outlook says there’s a 50 percent change of the lake rising nearly 3 ½ feet, and a 25 percent chance it could exceed its record level of 1,454.3 feet in June 2011.
The weather service bases the outlook on a wet fall and heavy winter snow with a lot of water content. The agency will issue updated outlooks as the spring flooding season nears.
The record level came after nearly two decades of wet weather quadrupled the lake’s size between 1992 and 2011. The prolonged flooding swallowed up about 250 square miles of farmland and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
