MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Officials say two young children have died and their father was injured after their home caught fire.

Bedington Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Brining told The Journal (https://bit.ly/2k4BejO) that firefighters arrived at the home in Martinsburg eight minutes after receiving the call Tuesday night, but weren’t able to get the children, ages 3 and 5, out of the home in time. He said the fire was contained to one room, but there was smoke damage throughout the house.

Brining said the children’s father woke up coughing due to smoke and was able to get out. He was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire chief said the blaze remains under investigation.
