MARKSVILLE, La. (AP) - A grand jury has indicted the wife of a former prison warden on charges of theft of $25,000 or more, malfeasance and injuring public records.
Avoyelles Parish District Attorney Charles Riddle III tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/2jIiJld ) Tonia Cain was indicted Thursday.
She and her husband, Nate Cain, resigned their posts at Avoyelles Correctional Center in May amid a series of investigations into their actions at the prison, where Tonia Cain served as business manager.
The indictment grew out of a legislative audit that suggested she had ordered subordinates to shred records related to concession sales to hide that more than $30,000 was missing.
Cain’s attorney, Jill Craft, denied her client committed any crimes. She says Tonia Cain is innocent and when a jury hears the evidence, she will be exonerated.
