ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The National Weather Service says the storm hitting the Northeast has dumped nearly a foot of snow on parts of upstate New York and up to 9 inches in New York City.

Hundreds of schools from the Albany area to the eastern tip of Long Island called off classes Thursday as the storm accompanied by gusty winds caused near-whiteout conditions in parts of eastern New York.

The weather service says up to 11 inches has fallen in the Hudson Valley by noon, while downstate areas around the city and on Long Island have received 6 to 9 inches.

A blizzard warning is in effect for all of Long Island until 6 p.m. Thursday. Meteorologists say high winds and blowing snow will reduce visibility in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
