JOHNSBURG, N.Y. (AP) - A New York historical group has been reimbursed for the sign that replaced the marker stolen from a roadside spot near Civil War photographer Mathew Brady’s upstate childhood home.

The Saratogian newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/2kDFLYO ) a local man paid the Johnsburg Historical Society $1,352 for the sign, despite never being charged with the crime. Prosecutors say the man was a suspect in the unsolved theft and made the payment as disposition of charges in an unrelated case.

The original sign said Brady was born in Johnsburg, located in the Adirondacks. But historians remain unsure whether he was born there or brought to the U.S. from Ireland by his parents while a baby.

The sign was installed a few years ago and stolen in 2014. The blue-and-yellow cast-iron replacement marker only says Brady’s childhood home was in Johnsburg.
