NEW ORLEANS (AP) - About half of the inmates inside the New Orleans jail are going to be temporarily moved to other facilities to allow for dozens of guards to obtain training certification.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/2kJGkCt ) reports that the transfers of about 550 inmates will begin next month.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the move is meant to make the jail safer and aimed at training deputies who aren’t yet certified so they can receive a pay bump.

Each Orleans Parish deputy who receives Peace Officer Standards Training certification becomes eligible for a $6,000 annual pay increase though the state of Louisiana’s supplemental pay program.

Gary Maynard, the jail’s independent compliance director, has said his goal is to ensure all deputies who work at the jail receive POST certification.
