Folks are getting cold for a cause this weekend in Vermont and New Hampshire.

The annual Penguin Plunge in Lake Champlain at the Burlington waterfront raised more than $500,000 this year, topping last year’s record of $480,000. The water temperature was 32 degrees on Saturday.

In New Hampshire, another Penguin Plunge was taking place at Hampton Beach State Park.

Several waves of high schoolers hopped in the water on Saturday, followed by more people taking the plunge on Sunday. The water temperature there is a balmy 41 degrees.

Both events benefit Special Olympics. Since its inception in 2000, New Hampshire’s Penguin Plunge has raised almost $7.3 million.
