RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) - Investigators are seeking to have murder charges filed against a man they believe fatally injured his cellmate at a Southern California jail.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper reports Saturday (https://bit.ly/2llWzD6) that Marcos Elias Garcia is suspected in the death of Kevin Plichta at West Valley Detention Center.

The 53-year-old was found seriously injured and unresponsive Tuesday in his cell. He died Friday at a hospital.

Authorities say they believe the 31-year-old Garcia fatally injured Plichta, but they have not yet determined a motive in the attack

Garcia was scheduled to be released in July after serving time in a stolen vehicle case.

Plichta was arrested last month on suspicion of felony vandalism.
