Two D.C. police officers were shot and a suspect was killed in Northeast Thursday night, but both officers don’t appear to have life-threatening injuries,

The shooting took place around 10:40 p.m. in the Trinidad neighborhood near the 1200 block of Holbrook Street NE, according to MPD Acting Chief Peter Newsham.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Timothy Williams, died on the way to the hospital and a weapon was found at the scene, Chief Newsham said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Two members of the MPD’s Fifth District firearms suppression team responded to 1200 block of Holbrook St NE to investigate reports of gunshot from earlier in the day, the chief said.

The officers, who were in an unmarked car, stopped Williams. A struggle ensued, followed by a foot chase. That’s when shots were fired, according to Chief Newsham. One officer was treated and released from the hospital, and the other sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Williams’ gun was recovered at the scene, and police said they believe it had been fired. Both officers turned on their body-worn cameras prior, and Mayor Muriel Bowser is currently consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office about when it will appropriate to release the footage.

Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, Chief Newsham said.
