PHOENIX (AP) - The Latest on a petition on immigration enforcement in Phoenix (all times local):

8:40 a.m.

Phoenix officials say the City Council will act Feb. 15 on a resident’s petition asking that it adopt so-called sanctuary status for immigrants.

The petition asks that Phoenix police not help enforce federal immigration laws and that Phoenix declare itself as a sanctuary city.

The petition submitted Wednesday invokes a City Charter provision requiring the council to act on the petition within 15 days. The provision doesn’t specify what type of action is required.

Sanctuary cities are under fire by President Donald Trump, who says they should lose federal funding for refusing to cooperate with immigration officials.

The term “sanctuary city” is loosely defined but generally means municipalities don’t cooperate with federal officials on immigration matters such as requests that local jails hold a suspect while authorities investigate their immigration status.

Proponents of sanctuary policies say they help foster trust between immigrants and police. Opponents say they pose a public safety threat.
