ATLANTA (AP) - Venezuelan forward Josef Martinez has been loaned to Atlanta United from Italy’s Torino.
The deal for the 23-year-old Martinez, announced Thursday, includes a club option to purchase.
Martinez has scored five goals during qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and has 13 goals and six assists in 76 appearances during three seasons with Torino. He will be a designated player, which means only part of his salary counts against Major League Soccer’s salary cap.
Expansion teams Atlanta and Minnesota start play in March.
