AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - It’s a terrible weekend to be a fish in Maine, but it’s almost over.
The state’s free fishing weekend that began on Saturday continues Sunday. Anyone can fish for free without a license on Maine’s waterways during the weekend.
Maine has more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams and almost 6,000 lakes and ponds. Gov. Paul LePage says the free weekend is a great opportunity for people to get familiar with winter fishing opportunities in the state.
The free weekend does not apply to people who have had their licenses suspended or revoked. Normal rules and regulations apply. That includes bag and possession limits.
Ice fishing for smelts is a popular winter tradition in Maine. The state is encouraging residents to first test the thickness of ice before fishing.
