HOUGHTON LAKE, Mich. (AP) - Michigan is angling to break some winter weather records - for warmth.

The National Weather Service reports Detroit is set to reach 63 degrees on Saturday - one degree above the temperature reached the same day in 1976. Flint is expected to hit 61 and Saginaw 58 - five degrees above their previous records.

Meteorologist Dave Cook of the weather service’s office in Oakland County’s White Lake Township says “we’re going to be mild for a while.” Temperatures are expected to be roughly 15 degrees above normal for the next week.

Northern Michigan also is forecasting some record-setting temperatures. Meteorologist Aaron Mayhew in Gaylord says Houghton Lake could break its 52-degree record by a degree or two, and Sault Ste. Marie is expecting to match the previous record of 46.
