PHOENIX (AP) - State auditors have found shortcomings in Arizona’s regulation of day care providers.

The Auditor General’s Office says the Department of Economic Security didn’t conduct some required comprehensive on-site inspections and that DES inspectors haven’t consistently evaluated providers’ compliance with state requirements.

A performance audit released by the office also found that DES didn’t have procedures to receive, investigate and monitor complaints.

The department says in response that it accepts the audit’s findings and will implement a series of recommendations for improvements.
