MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a wrong-way driver traveled about 18 miles on Phoenix-area freeways before state troopers succeeded in stopping her vehicle.

The Department of Public Safety says nobody was injured during the incident early Thursday morning but two patrol vehicles were damaged.

DPS said the first report came in around 2:20 a.m. about a wrong-way driver southbound in northbound lanes of State Route 51 in Phoenix. The driver then traveled on Interstate 10 to the U.S. 60 through Tempe and into Mesa.

Troopers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver after using tire-deflating devices.

DPS said 25-year-old Megan Melanson of Phoenix was arrested on suspicion of DUI, aggravated assault, criminal damage, endangerment and resisting arrest.

It wasn’t immediately known if Melanson has a lawyer who could comment on the allegations.
