AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A forensic psychiatrist says the condition of a man charged with killing his father has improved somewhat since he started taking antipsychotic medication under court order.
Twenty-seven-year-old Leroy Smith III was charged with killing his father in May 2014 and then dismembering the body.
Smith is the first person in the state to be forced to take psychiatric medication in an effort to restore his mental capacity so he could fully participate in his own defense.
Dr. Carlyle Voss testified in court on Tuesday that some aspects of Smith’s condition improved between September 2015 and January of this year. The Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/2lhvMLq ) reports Voss says Smith is still convinced he needs a trial to prove his innocence.
Voss describes Smith as “absolutely fixed” on “delusional material.”
