GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A mid-March trial date has been set for a 36-year-old woman accused of fatally sabotaging her fiance’s kayak on the Hudson River.
Angelika Graswald of Poughkeepsie faces second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the April 2015 death of 46-year-old Vincent Viafore. Orange County Judge Robert Freehill on Tuesday scheduled jury selection to begin March 13.
Prosecutors say Graswald removed a drain plug from Viafore’s kayak and pushed a floating paddle away from him after his kayak capsized. Viafore drowned.
Defense attorney Richard Portale says Viafore’s death was an accident caused by high waves, cold water and alcohol.
Graswald remains in Orange County Jail on $3 million bail.
