PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for much of northern New England as the region experienced its first significant snowfall of the season.

Parts of Maine and New Hampshire can expect to get four to six inches of snow on Saturday. The Portland International Jetport had 2½ inches by 4:30 p.m.

The weather service issued advisories for almost all of the two states, excluding only small sections of far northern Maine and New Hampshire and far eastern Maine. The service also issued an advisory for a small part of southern Vermont. Most of the rest of Vermont’s currently under a “hazardous weather outlook” notice.

Snow was expected to accumulate mostly in the afternoon on Saturday. Some overnight snow that impacts the Sunday morning commute was also expected.
