HOWELL, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man is dead after he was struck by a car while walking along a stretch of highway not far from the shore.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said in a statement that the unidentified 53-year-old man from Freehold was killed after he was struck by a 2010 Mini Cooper on Saturday along Route 9 in Howell.

Gramiccioni says the vehicle was being driven by 21-year-old Juanean Perez, of Jackson.

Howell Police say she has been arrested and faces a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence. It’s unclear whether she has an attorney to comment.

Howell is just over 10 miles (16 kilometers) from several coastal towns in Monmouth County.
