ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (AP) - A two-day river festival is being planned in West Virginia to coincide with the annual 12-mile (19-kilometer) Tour De Coal community float event.
St. Albans Mayor Scott James told The Charleston Gazette-Mail that Yak Fest will be held June 15 and 16 and will offer entertainment options for Tour De Coal participants and their families and friends. The name refers to a shortened version of “kayak.”
In addition to entertainment and food, the festival will include a display of watercraft, paddleboards, fishing kayaks and fishing gear.
James says a new park fronting the Coal River is planned and is likely to include a kayak-canoe launch site.
Coal River Group board chairman Bill Currey says more than 1,000 paddlers took part in the Tour De Coal last year.
